Type Locality and Naming
SUBSURFACE: Well Dabka-2 (interval 2970 m to 3097.5 m), its thickness is of 127.5 m. [Original Publication: Pandey, J., Singh, N.P., Krishna, B.R., et al., (1993) Lithostratigraphy of Indian Petroliferous Basins, Document III, Cambay Basin, 2 Volumes, KDMIPE, ONGC Publication, pp. 1-166.]. The name Songir Formation was extended from the outcropping type-section of Songir Sandstone beyond the eastern margin of Cambay Graben.
Lithology and Thickness
Coarse-grained sandstone. The formation consists of sand with minor claystone. Sands are light to brownish-pink and whitish, coarse- to very coarse-grained, subangular to subrounded in nature. Claystones are brick to brownish-red and non-calcareous.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It has unconformable relationship with overlying Deccan Trap.
Upper contact
It has unconformable relationship with underlying granite gneiss of the Pre-Cambrian basement.
Regional extent
The formation is considered equivalent to exposed Himmatnagar Sandstone Fm in the north and Nimar Sandstone Fm in the south, in Narmada valley.
